History: The Tragedy of Odimboro’s Funeral (Izoku Odimboro)

Tragedy of Odimboro’s Funeral

The funeral of Odimboro stands as one of the most tragic and indelible events in Ebira history. Odimboro, a man of immense wealth and influence from the Ezuka clan, was also reputed to possess formidable mystical powers. It’s widely believed that, prior to his death, he ominously predicted that many would accompany him into eternity.

The Fateful Day in Okunchi, 1903

That fateful day in 1903, hundreds of people gathered within Odimboro’s grass-thatched compound in Okunchi for his final funeral rites. The air vibrated with the rhythmic pounding of the “anuva,” a pot-drum, as both young and old danced in a traditional farewell to the departed soul.

Then, horror struck without warning. The entire compound mysteriously and suddenly erupted in flames. Panic ensued as people scrambled for the sole exit, which quickly became impassable, blocked by a heap of fallen bodies. The inferno raged, consuming hundreds of individuals beyond recognition.

Survival Amidst the Inferno

Miraculously, only the royal masquerade (eku-oba) guarding Odimboro’s corpse and a handful of others managed to escape the conflagration. Even more astonishingly, Odimboro’s corpse and the winding sheets covering it remained untouched by the fire.

Another account suggests that the fire was not accidental but rather the vengeful act of Esimi, the Ohiomahi of Uhwodo, who harbored grievances against Odimboro.

A Lasting Impact on Ebira Traditions

This devastating experience forever altered Ebira customs. To this day, all traditional social functions, including marriages and burial ceremonies, are held in open spaces rather than enclosed compounds, a direct legacy of the tragedy at Odimboro’s funeral.
